“From Concept Through Completion,” this Advanced Ballet Bodice Class is for those who want to hone their bodice-making skills and, at the same time, learn more about the process of designing and creating.  In this Advanced-Level Ballet Bodice Class, each student will first, roughly sketch out their basic bodice design idea, using an upper-body croqui (body sketch) provided in class, then, starting with one of our bodice patterns, will begin to make their design a reality using costume-shop pattern alteration techniques as well as some basic draping.  Student’s choices will include three basic shapes, one of which they will choose to work from: Long-line, Russian-style; European-style with diagonal-style-lines and a point in the front; or a basic princess-seamed-style. Students will then re-design the basic pattern they have been given, and will do any altering or grading needed to customize the pattern to the specific measurements they bring to class.  They will then re-draw the pattern they have created.

Once the students have finished re-designing and altering the pattern, they will then cut out their designs using muslin, baste it together and “fit” it on a dress form (or a dancer if you bring one with you). Adjustments will then be made to the pattern and it will be re-drawn into the final version of the student’s design. Finally, when happy with the pattern, students will put their pattern on cardboard for ease in cutting. The bodice will then be cut out and constructed. We will be using fabric layering techniques, both regular and elastic-piped edges, and seam piping. Students are encouraged to bring bits of laces and small pieces of fabrics that they would like to incorporate into their bodice design. Prerequisite – Bodice Two or work in a professional or college costume shop – you must have mastered the many techniques taught in the Bodice One and Bodice Two classes before embarking on this journey.

SHIPPING COSTS

Tutu.Com offers free, domestic ground shipping to the 48 contiguous United States, up to $20, on orders costing $149 and up. This free option covers about 85% of orders. For very heavy orders that cost $149 or more, the first $20 of your shipping will be free. We will invoice you for any shipping amount over $20. Once shipping is paid, your order will go out. Our minimum domestic shipping charge for orders under $149 is $14.95 for Ground, and $37 for 1 to 3 day Express/Expedited, depending on where you are in the US. Free shipping option is not available for Express/Expedited shipping. Base International shipping charges are Canada: $42.00 USD. All other countries: $70.00 USD. If your base-rate/minimum shipping charge does not cover the cost to ship your order, we will bill additional shipping charges when your order is ready to ship.

We have several base rates for classical tutus that must be shipped in over-sized boxes. Actual costs can run between $40-$70 in the continental U.S., more in some places. We will always research what is the least expensive way to safely ship your items. We will also insure costumes for their full value. This will add to the cost, but not too much. All custom costumes are shipped with signature required when delivered. This is for your protection.

If you require a shipping cost estimate prior to placing your order, please email us at orders@tutu.com and we will be happy to estimate your shipping charges.

TRACKING & INSURANCE

Unless otherwise requested, orders shipped within the US, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and most US Territories and Military addresses, are sent via UPS Ground shipping (2-6 day) with tracking. You will receive an email with your package's tracking number so that you may track it. UPS provides insurance for the first $100 of an order. If your order cost is higher, we will automatically insure it for the total. There is an extra charge when we do this, but it is minimal.

PROCESSING TIME

We strive to ship in-stock items within two Business Days after we receive your order. (This does not include custom-made items, like tutus and other costumes, which require a lead time and are shipped when completed. Also, orders which include fabric-cuts or custom-dying may require an additional time, but we will always let you know how long it will take.) All orders are shipped FOB Charlotte, NC USA.

INTERNATIONAL

For destinations outside the United States, delivery times are dependent on your destination country and on your local postal and customs services. Customs delays are not the responsibility of Tutu.Com. Our shipping rates do not include any customs charges that may be imposed by your country's customs regulations.

TUTUSCHOOLS FAQ

Who can attend TutuSchool Seminars?
  • Anyone interested in learning or advancing ballet costume-making skills—beginners, experienced stitchers, studio owners, and passionate ballet fans are all welcome.

  • No previous experience in costume making is required. TutuSchool is designed to accommodate all skill levels, from beginners to advanced creators. However, participants must already know how to sew both by machine and by hand.

  • Each seminar provides the opportunity to work at your own pace, choose your own projects, and receive personalized support from instructors.

Because when you come to a class, the time is 100% yours – no dogs to walk, families to feed, neighbors to drop by and interrupt your process.

Our goal is that you leave us with costumes that are better than what you normally do at home. Our teachers will not let you skip steps, or avoid the tedious parts of the process, like proper pressing and cutting, and will teach you by not only showing you how they do it, but by helping you step-by-step. Our goal is not just to disseminate the information, but to help you with HOW to do things in the best way to create something beautiful and strong, and to answer all your questions as to WHY we do things the way we do in the order we do.

We promise to make it worth your while to spend your time with us.

Tutu.com’s Shop literally makes tutus every single day.  We make more tutus than probably any shop out there, and by doing so we have come up with many new ways that enhance the time-honored traditions.

We are constantly innovating because when you repeat a process thousands of times, you know it so well that you have the luxury of improving on the techniques.

Although we do design, we consider ourselves to be technicians, engineering tutus and other ballet costumes to be strong and to last, in much the same way that an engineer realizes the designs of an architect.

Read our Faculty Bios.
