Men's Tunic Courses
Learn how to sew and design Men's Ballet Tunics at TutuSchool!
Our Level 1 Men's Ballet Tunic Course is an introduction to sewing costumes for male dancers. Classical tutus and women’s costumes aren’t the only kinds of dance costumes. Men’s costuming is often forgotten or put off until the last minute, due to the fact that so few costumers have experience making these very-important costumes. These ‘other’ costumes shouldn’t come from second-hand stores or someone’s attic. In this class, you will choose from one of four pattern styles: Claudia Folts/Kellie Sheehan’s Classic Style Tunic, which is a great base and easily adaptable to different necklines/sleeve styles for many roles; Jeremy Bernardoni’s Deep V Doublet or his Prince Charming Doublet, two classically elegant doublets with simple, clean style lines; and Don Quixote Jacket, the perfect bolero for many Spanish-style roles. In this Level One class, you will learn how to correctly use your grain lines, and choose between set-in sleeves and sleeves set on an undervest.
Level Two Men's Ballet Tunic Course is for those who have mastered the basics of sewing men’s costumes and want to learn and refine more advanced tailoring techniques. You will learn when and how to use various interlinings, choose between French-tailored set-in sleeves and sleeves set on an undervest, and master advanced pressing techniques used to give your men’s costumes that extra special quality that few can attain. Choose from several patterns: Claudia Folts’ Princely Tunic with sleeves attached to a separate undervest; Jeremy Bernardoni’s Nutcracker Jacket; Jeremy Bernardoni’s Sleeping Beauty Doublet; or Jeremy Bernardoni’s elegant Rococo-style Doublet.
Level 3 Men's Tunic Course is for those who have mastered the basics of sewing men’s costumes and are familiar with working with tailored men’s jacket patterns. This class demands advanced sewing expertise and focus.
The class features Claudia Folts's newest men's ballet costume design - a reversible vest with a separate undervest with attached sleeves. The vest can be made to be a peasant costume on one side and a prince costume on the other. It is both the epitome of classic elegance and casual country. It can also be made as two different princely costumes - Snow King on one side and tthe Cavalier on the other.
Along with the detailing earned in levels 1 and 2, you will be adding piped seams and other details to this project.
Prerequisites: Each course will list specific prerequisites.
