Men's Tunic Courses
Learn how to sew and design Men's Ballet Tunics at TutuSchool!
Our Level 1 Men's Ballet Tunic Course is an introduction to sewing costumes for male dancers. Classical tutus and women’s costumes aren’t the only kinds of dance costumes. Men’s costuming is often forgotten or put off until the last minute, since so few costumers have experience making these very-important costumes. These ‘other’ costumes shouldn’t come from second-hand stores or someone’s attic. In this class, you will work with Claudia Folts/Kellie Sheehan’s Classic Style Tunic, which is a great base and easily adaptable to different necklines/sleeve styles for many roles. In this Level One class, you will learn how to correctly use your grain lines and the importance of using sleeves set on an undervest rather than set-in sleeves.
Level Two Men's Ballet Tunic Course is for those who have mastered the basics of sewing men’s costumes and want to learn and refine more advanced tailoring techniques. You will be working with Claudia Folts’ Princely Tunic pattern, with full, double georgette, cuffed sleeves set on an undervest, and will master advanced pressing techniques used to give your men’s costumes that extra special quality that few can attain. Neckline and some seams will be piped, and you will learn how to insert lycra into your side seams, allowing for extra breathing room, as well as ease of movement during partnering.
Level 3 Men's Tunic Course is for those who have mastered the basics of sewing men’s costumes and are familiar with working with tailored men’s jacket patterns. This class demands advanced sewing expertise and focus.
The class features Claudia Folts's newest men's ballet costume design - a reversible vest with a separate undervest with attached sleeves. The vest can be made to be a peasant costume on one side and a prince costume on the other. It is both the epitome of classic elegance and casual country. Two different undervest/sleeve carriers will be made, one to go with each side of the reversible vest. It can also be made as two different princely costumes - Snow King on one side and the Cavalier on the other.
Along with the detailing learned in levels 1 and 2, you will also be adding piped seams and other details to this project. Some embellishments will be provided since each “side” will need to be embellished before putting it together. You are also encouraged to bring your own embellishments, as taste in decorations can be quite individual/personal.
Prerequisites: Each course will list specific prerequisites.
